I had one of the lousiest bad beats of all my poker playing career just a couple of weeks ago. I was playing against two remaining opponents after the flop. My hand was a cool Three of a Kind; I was holding 8-J as starters and the flop showed J-4-J. I knew my hand was not solid enough, so I was moving and placing bets carefully. The turn showed a 2 — they are all different suited — so I knew that I am looking at a possible pot take-down. In raised my opponent and one of the players folded. It’s just him and me for the river. The river showed a 7, so I knew my chances were quite high. I bet twice the size of the pot, thinking no matter how my opponent reacted I can have the pot for sure. He called, and then the showdown. We both had Three of a Kinds; the only problem was his kicker, a close 9.

I was that close to taking down a little over $5,000 of pot money and his kicker literally kicked me out of my game. The fact that my kicker was an 8 almost made me jumped right onto the table in frustration. Yes, that is just how important kickers can be in tiebreakers. Whenever you are analyzing the relative strength of your hand, don’t make the mistake I made by not taking your kicker into considerations. A higher ranked kicker of your opponent’s can cost you a lot of money. Don’t forget that getting beaten by a higher kicker can also put you on tilt in an instant. I learned my lesson the hard way that day, so I’m passing the information to you so that you wouldn’t have to deal with the horrible experience.

The basic rule of determining the winner in Texas Hold’em poker is by comparing poker hands. In order to play the game properly, you need to understand the right hand combinations. Knowing possible hand combinations can help you formulate strategies, make decisions as the play progresses, and adjust your stakes according to the relative strength of your hand.

The lowest possible hand in Texas Hold’em poker is high card, followed by a pair. The cards you are holding or the pair you get is judged by its value. Two pairs have more value than a single pair, so holding two pairs can make you win the pot against other opponents playing with only a pair.

Three of a Kind is the next, stronger, hand combination in Texas Hold’em poker. Holding three cards of equal rank means you have a three of a kind; this combination, again, is stronger than two pairs. Five cards in sequence regardless of the suit construct a Straight, allowing you to beat three of a kind and any other lower hand combination. Don’t get over confident with your hand combination yet, because players with a Flush — any five cards of the same suit — can beat you with their hand just like that.

My personal favorite would have to be Full House — three cards of equal rank and two different cards of equal rank. The hand combination may not be the strongest, but the odds of constructing a Full House with the right starting hand is actually quite high. Four cards of equal rank beat Full House with Four of a Kind. To top our list, we have a Straight Flush — yes, it is a combination of five cards of the same suit in sequence, just like you think it is — and a Royal Flush.

If you have played online poker for quite a while, you will notice new players with less than £100 on their gambling bankroll playing £10/£20 no-limit Hold’em poker. These players are actually people seeking ways to get reach quick — and effortless — by playing poker online; I’m sure they will learn their lesson in about 20 hands at most, unless they are really good with poker or really lucky with their gambles.

Managing your poker bankroll should be an integrated part of your poker plays. There are real money at stakes here, and the best thing you can do is invest time and efforts to make sure the risks you are exposed to are compensated with the right amount of potential profit. You can never be too careful with your poker bankroll, especially if you want continue playing poker.

First thing you should do to alternatively manage your poker bankroll is determine the right bankroll size; when you deposit your account, only put the money you can afford to lose that particular month. You will decrease the unwanted level of emotional stress usually exist if you are playing with money you need to finance your life.

After you have the right amount of money on your poker bankroll, determine how you are going to spend the money. Assuming you lose every single hand you play, set the right amount of losing hands you need and see the kind of table limit you should be playing at. By playing at the right table limits, you are managing your risks actively.

When you win, set aside the money you win and don’t use them on poker plays. Make sure you stick to the limits and amount of losing hands you set at the beginning of each month. This way, you are also actively protecting your winnings in the process.

One of the premium starting hands in Texas Hold’em poker is the pocket pair of Kings. The pair is a top pair indeed, and you are looking at a huge chance of taking down the pot. Be careful not to throw any unrealized smiles though; your opponents can pick that smile up as a tell and predict your every move. So you have a relatively strong hard to start with, what can be done about it?

If you are thinking about going all-in pre-flop at this point — as many online players seems to think — please hold your clicks for one second and observe other players’ betting pattern. The best move at this point is to limp; simply call the available bet and see the flop without risking too much money. Poker is about possibilities and the possibility of having another strong hand against your pocket pair of Kings is actually quite high.

After the flop, determine the relative strength of your hand carefully. If another King is shown, you are looking at a possible pot take-down. If not, simply determine the strongest possible hand combination and see if your pocket pair of Kings can defend against it. You can also use other opponents’ betting pattern and tells to determine the relative strength of their hands, so be sure to take all aspects into consideration. You can also opt for opponent elimination; simply place large enough bet to scare players with relatively weak hands and reduce the number of opponents.

The turn should be the most important card. If you are pretty sure about your hand’s strength, you can raise the bet quite substantially and lure opponents into enlarging the pot for you. This strategy can only be effective if you are sure you can take down the pot with your hand.

Don’t worry; we are not going to go through basic poker hand combinations at all. This article is written to remind you of how important it is to gamble responsibly at all times. In the game of Texas Hold’em poker, the betting can get pretty intense after the flop and the turn. You may have a strong hand, but you also need to consider your opponents’ hands before making your move. The best way to do this is by analyzing the strongest possible hands.

For example, you start with a hand of J-A; a pretty strong starting hand. If the flop shows 4-9-J of different suits, the best possible hand so far is a three of a kind. The odds of getting three of a kind after the flop is quite low; you currently have a pair of Jacks — so the odds of other player getting that three of a kind are even lower. You can rest assured that your pair of Jacks is relatively strong. At this point, observe other players’ bet placements — plus the knowledge you have on their previous plays — to determine if any of their hands is actually stronger than a pair of Jacks.

The turn shows a King, so anyone with Q-10 can now have a strong-looking Straight. Your pair of Jacks can also be beaten by a pair of Kings, so the relative strength of your hand decreases quite substantially. Observe your opponents’ betting pattern and see if anyone is showing clear sign of confidence. If you are playing at brick and mortar poker tables, you can also observe tells properly. By making your moves properly, you will be able to reduce risks and be more profitable no matter that the river is. Use the same principles whenever you play Texas Hold’em poker.

Playing online poker for quite a while, I notice the frequency of pre-flop all-ins is quite high among online poker player. Pre-flop is actually a very important moment in Texas Hold’em poker games, yet you will notice the lack of magnitude in hand analysis and selection when you play online poker. There is nothing wrong with going all-in before seeing the flop, but finding out that your opponent is actually putting all his gambling money on the pot with a 7-2 of different suits can be frustrating after some times.

The first thing you need to do pre-flop is analyze the relative strength of you starting hand and map potential hand combination you can construct with the right table cards; this is called counting your outs. The number of outs you have with your starting hand should determine the amount of money you are willing to bet — I said willing, because you are not required to make the maximum amount of bet you can even with a strong starting hand.

Professional poker players also use the number of outs they get with the starting hand to compare odds and possibilities to use as bases for decision making. After proper calculation, you can continue with observing other players’ moves and amount of bets. You can pretty much see the relative strength of your starting hand compared to theirs, and then bet accordingly. With the right starting hand, such as a pocket pair of Aces or Kings and either same suited A-K, A-Q, or A-J, you can choose to go all-in before seeing the flop. I personally think there is not a single occasion when you should go all-in before you are sure that you will take down the pot, but you can have different play strategies and the decision is entirely up to you.
